Five timer types

Each timer is created and styled on its own. A product page timer shows below the Add to cart button. A top or bottom bar runs across the store, and shoppers can close it. Both are on the Free plan. A landing page timer sits at the top of collection pages or on the password page, from Starter. A cart timer shows on the cart page and in the cart drawer while the cart has items, and an email timer is an image for marketing emails, both from Growth.

Any plan can create and edit every type. The plan only matters when you publish, so you can build and preview a cart or email timer on Free and decide afterwards.

Countdown modes

Countdown to a date runs to one moment, entered in your shop timezone, and every shopper sees the same moment. Fixed minutes gives each visitor their own countdown, which starts when they first see the timer and carries on across page loads in that browser. Another browser or device starts its own, and editing the timer starts everyone again. A cart timer always uses fixed minutes, and an email timer always counts to a date.

From Starter, a timer can be recurring: a daily time window on the weekdays you choose, in your shop timezone, counting down to the end of the window. A window may cross midnight and belongs to the day it starts on. It can start today or on a date, and end never or on a date. Starter also adds a scheduled start, for a timer that should appear later.

Once it ends

A countdown to a date can unpublish itself, show a custom title, or do nothing and stay at zero. Unpublish is the default. The storefront hides it at zero, and the app unpublishes it within a minute without you opening the app. A fixed minutes timer can hide for that buyer, repeat the countdown, show a custom title, or do nothing, and hide is the default. A recurring timer can hide, show a custom title, or do nothing, with do nothing as the default.

A cart timer can hide for the buyer, which is the default, repeat, or delete all the items in the cart. Repeat is never the default: a countdown that starts over tells shoppers about a deadline that is not real, so choose it only when the offer really renews, and the editor says so when you pick it. An email timer shows 00:00:00:00 or a message of yours.

Design, and what the numbers show

Three layouts, Standard, Balanced, and Inline. 20 color presets designed in house, which change colors and background and keep the rest, or your own colors with transparency. Gradient backgrounds, or a background image uploaded to your store Files or picked from a suggested library. Your theme font or a bundled web font. Labels for days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Landing timers and bars can carry a button or make the whole bar clickable.

Every timer has its own analytics, filtered by date range: impressions, clicks, click through rate, dismissals when a shopper closes a bar, and completions when a timer reaches zero.

Setting up a timer, in four steps.

In order. Each step assumes the one before it is finished, so skipping one is how the last step fails for a reason that looks unrelated.

  1. Step one

Create a timer and pick its type

The type decides where it can show and which plan publishing it needs.

  2. Step two

    Set the countdown

Content tab: text, mode, the end date or the minutes, and what happens once it ends.

  3. Step three

    Design it

Design tab, with the live preview beside it. Start from a preset, then adjust.

  4. Step four

    Place it and publish

Placement tab for where it shows, then Publish. Email timers have a Code tab instead.

Settings reference

The controls this page touches, with what each one does and the default the app ships where there is one.

Timer type
Product page, top or bottom bar, landing page, cart, or email.
Countdown mode
Countdown to a date, fixed minutes per visitor, or a recurring daily window from Starter. New product, bar, and landing timers start on a date one day out.
Shop timezone
Dates and windows are entered and run in the timezone set in your Shopify settings, not the browser you are using.
Fixed minutes
120 by default, and 15 for a cart timer. Kept per visitor in that browser.
Scheduled start
From Starter. The timer stays out of sight until its start time.
Once it ends
Options depend on the mode. Defaults: unpublish for a date, hide for fixed minutes and cart, do nothing for recurring.
Labels
Days, Hrs, Mins, Secs by default. The days column hides itself while it reads zero, which you can turn off.
Call to action
Landing timers and bars only. A button, linking to your home page by default, or a clickable bar.
Bar position
Top or bottom of the page. A top bar can be sticky. The close button is optional.

If this does not work

The failures most likely on this procedure, with the check that resolves each one. If none of them fit, we would rather have the store URL than a guess.

The deadline is an hour out

The shop timezone in your Shopify settings is probably not the one you think, and daylight saving is the usual cause. Fix it in Shopify rather than moving the deadline. The app picks up a timezone change from Shopify by itself.

Publish is blocked with an upgrade message

The timer uses something a higher plan covers, and the message lists what. Or the store has used its monthly timer views, in which case timers are paused on the storefront, and new timers cannot be published nor published ones edited, until next month or an upgrade.

A shopper says their countdown started again

Fixed minutes are kept in the browser, so another device, a private window, or cleared site data starts a new one. Editing the timer starts everyone again, and a timer set to repeat starts over at zero by design.
